Farm Tours

Take a walking tour of the historic Straus Home Ranch, in Marshall, and explore our 166-acre, certified organic working ranch. Well take you through the fields to meet the heifers (teenage cows) and regale you with stories about Marin’s history in dairy farming, organic agriculture and environmental conservation. There’ll be one short, though moderately steep hill, with fabulous views of Tomales Bay and the Point Reyes National Seashore. After the walk, you’ll be guided through a sampling of local, artisan cheeses.

Our parents, Bill and Ellen Straus, owned two ranches here along Tomales Bay: the 166-acre Home Ranch and the 500-acre dairy. The Home Ranch is where Bill and Ellen lived, and raised four kids. After our parents passed away in 2002 / 2003, we split up ownership of the ranches. Vivien, Miriam and Michael co-own the Home Ranch. Separately, our brother Albert owns and manages both the Dairy and Straus Family Creamery at a separate location (and not included in the Home Ranch tour.)

Tours are guided by Vivien, Miriam and/or Michael each offering her/his own unique / quirky / humorous perspective on food, farming and what it was like growing up on the farm.

Straus Home Ranch has long been an epicenter for the environmental conservation, sustainable agriculture and organic food movements. For 75 years, the Straus family has been deeply involved protecting the land, and building a viable future for family farmers. Their contributions include the Marin Agricultural Land Trust (credited with protecting over half of Marin’s agricultural land from development), Straus Family Creamery (the first organic dairy west of the Mississippi), and the California Cheese Trail.
